- ―Tatsuya Shima to Eriko Asakura in the manga.
The impromptu rematch between Akio Asakura and Tatsuya Shima is the second battle in Wangan Midnight.
Prior to the battle[]
While cruising on the Wangan Line, Akio Asakura engages in an impromptu race against a Porsche 911 Turbo known as the "Blackbird", with the Blackbird effortlessly beating Akio and leaves him in the dust. The next day, Akio and Ma's brother, Ko-Chan, talks about the race and Blackbird as Ma goes down and interrupts the conversation, causing an short argument between the two brothers. As Akio gets on Ma's scooter, Ko-Chan reminds him of a scrapped Old Z with good parts and Akio with Ma decides to head to the place where the Z is located, an Scrapyard. Both of them wanders the scrapyard in search for the Z, Akio spots a first generation Nissan Fairlady Z, which he remembers passing by him with a girl in the passenger seat.
Akio and Ko-Chan inspects the Fairlady Z and were amazed by its heavy modifications. Akio learns that the previous owner of the Z has the same name as him and that it was supposed to be scrapped because of its unnatural history. Later that night, Akio and Ko-Chan have an brief conversation on the scrapyard, with Ko-Chan deciding to take a shot and repair the car. The next morning, The Fairlady is now fixed along with a new registration book in the same Yokohoma jurisdiction (which allows it to keep its license plate).
Later that day, the Z driven by Akio speeds down on the Wangan Line, but stops at a parking area. Ko-Chan then tells Akio to not overlook its history. The next day, Akio talks with his teacher in school about his lack of attendance, causing him to repeat his final year of high school.
On the otherhand. The Blackbird's driver, Tatsuya Shima, talks to an unknown man about the sightings and the return of the Fairlady Z (which is also known as the "Devil Z") on the Wangan every night. Akio returns to the Wangan with the Devil Z, As Tatsuya waits for the Z to pass by him. Afterwards, Tatsuya begins to chase the car, Akio then checks his mirror and sees that the Blackbird has appeared to challenge him, in-which Akio accepts the race.
During the battle[]
The race begins with Akio in the lead and both cars accelerating down the Wangan at high speeds, both of the cars dodge the truck that switched into the middle lane. Afterwards, both cars switch into the middle lane to dodge the cars on the left and right lanes.
The cars continue to race at very high speeds, with the Blackbird still behind the Z. They both enter the Tokyo-ko tunnel with the Blackbird now nearing the Z a bit. As the race continues with them exiting the tunnel, a lane merge appeared ahead with an yellow hazard light. As Akio tries to switch lanes and overtake the Blackbird, the Devil Z's handling suddenly stiffenes, causing the car to slide through the closed lanes and hit the road signs, followed up with the Z crashing on the concrete wall. Tatsuya manages to avoid getting hit by the Z.
After the battle[]
Akio exits the crashed Fairlady Z, saddened that the car didn't move the way he wanted to. The next morning, Ko-Chan tells Akio that he doesn't want to fix the Z again, and tells Akio that he can find another S30Z if he wants one.
After a month has passed since there encounter, Tatsuya waits for both Akio and the Z to recover even with an accident like that. Shima then realizes that he is somehow looking for Akio and the Z without even noticing it.
