- "I'll show you the Wangan conqueror still runs, Nobody can touch the Blackbird."
- ―Tatsuya Shima
The Blackbird (Japanese: ブラックバード Romaji: Burakkubādo) is the nickname given to Tatsuya Shima's car in the Wangan Midnight franchise. This is the second incarnation of the car, replacing the initial 930 generation 911.
About[]
In the early chapters, It was based on the Porsche 911 Turbo S (930) but after Shima peforms a reckless boost that was forbidden by the owner of the tuning shop he frequented during that time, and as a result, the engine of the 930 blew up. After that, he switched to a Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6 (964). (Note: This is only seen in the original manga and is not mentioned in the anime and games.)
In the games, it is based on multiple cars as stand-in for the Porsche 911 Turbo S (930)/Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6 due to Porsche's exclusive deal with Electronic Arts at the time of the game's releases:
- In the PS2 version of Wangan Midnight, it was based on the RUF RCT, a Porsche 964 based car with less power than CTR despite having a bigger engine (3.6 litres instead of 3.3 litres)
- In the PS3 version of Wangan Midnight, there are 5 versions of the Blackbird; the first being a RUF CTR, and the rest being differently tuned RUF RCTs.
- In the Japanese release of Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune until 3DX+, it was based on the Gemballa 3.8 RS (itself based on the Porsche 911 Carrera RS 3.8) and only seen in the Japanese version of the game.
- However, due to licensing issues overseas regarding Gemballa, it was changed to a Nissan Fairlady Z Version S (known globally as the 350Z). It was completely stock in 1-2, and equipped with a NISMO S-Tune GT (Aero Set C) in 3-3DX+, to make it look based on its Porsche counterpart.
- In Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 4 until 5DX+, it was based on RUF CTR, a sports car made by RUF, based on "unstamped" Porsche 911 bodies and featuring a highly tuned 3.4 litre flat-six engine. The Blackbird in later chapters would be based on the RUF RCT.
- In WMMT 6 onward, it is based on the Porsche 911 Turbo S (930). Later chapters change the Blackbird to be based on a 911 Turbo 3.6 (964).
In all iterations, the car is tuned to 700 hp and features gold-colored RAYS GT-U (WMMT1-5DX+)/BBS LM (WMMT6 onwards) wheels. The Porsche-based cars originally ran 993-spec aero parts but later changed into race-inspired aero kits, while the Fairlady Z-based car ran on Nismo S-Tune aero. In the Live Action movie of Wangan Midnight, it featured Work Meister S1 3-Piece Rims.

Trivia[]
- The Blackbird is modeled after the Yoshida Specials Porsche 930 driven by the chairman of Mid Night Racing Team.
- The Blackbird is derived from the Cold War airplane, the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, hence why they're both vehicles colored black and also fast. Tatsuya claimed he made his own stickers but only used them for one day because he thought that the same element of speed also existed on the Metro Highway, which was proven true upon encountering the Devil Z.
- Starting in Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 6 onwards, the player cannot recreate the Blackbird due to the 930 and 964 having different aero kits
