Wangan Midnight is a 2001 arcade racing game developed by Genki and published by NAMCO, using the Namco System 246 as its platform. It is the first Wangan Midnight arcade game, as well as the first video game in the entire series.[1] It did not have a card system unlike the Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune series.

The export version was also released with rival character names displayed as abbreviations or short names.

Trivia[]

  • Tatsuya Shima's Blackbird (based on the Porsche 911 Turbo 3.6 (964)) was originally meant to appear as a rival in the arcade version but was ultimately cut. This was likely due to Porsche's licensing agreement with EA at the time, which gave EA exclusive rights. However, the car was playable in the export version, despite being classified as unused content.
  • This game and Wangan Midnight R are the only arcade Wangan Midnight titles to feature the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VII (CT9A), as it does not appear in any of the Maximum Tune games.
  • As a nod to Rally-X, the S-Flag can be collected during gameplay.
