Wangan Midnight is a PlayStation 3 racing game released on July 5th, 2007. It was developed by Genki, and is part of the Shutokou Battle racing game series.
Wangan Midnight features several game modes, such as Story Mode, Free Run, Time Attack, Survival Mode and Maximum Speed Mode.
Features[]
Story Mode follows the story in the Wangan Midnight anime alongside being voice acted, and you can play as all major characters in the show. Notable characters include Akio Asakura, Tatsuya Shima, Reina Akikawa, Keiichiro Aizawa and Takayuki Kuroki.
Free Run lets the player roam freely around the entire game map. The player can choose if traffic is present, and may use any car they have unlocked. Engine overheating is also not present in this mode, as the engine temperature meter always remains in the starting position - this means the player can push their cars to the absolute limit.
Survival Mode consists of three classes, Novice, Intermediate and Monster. This game mode requires the player to defeat 20, 50 and 99 racers without being defeated respectively. Novice runs on the C1, Intermediate runs on the New Belt Line and Monster runs on the Wangan and Yokohane.
Maximum Speed Mode allows the player to choose any car they have unlocked and drive the car on the now defunct Yatabe test course, where they must achieve the highest speed they can.
Cars[]
All vehicles are licensed models from the Japanese manufacturers Nissan, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Mazda and Subaru. The only non-Japanese automaker is RUF, a European tuner of Porsche models.
Trivia[]
- All voice actors in game are the same as in the anime version of the series with the exception of Yuichi Takagi (voiced by Bon Ishihara in the game, instead of Fumihiko Tachiki), Tatsuya (who does not appear in anime in Monster Machine arc, in the game he is voiced by Daisuke Ono), and Masaki (who does not appear in anime as the Akasaka Straight arc is skipped, in the game he is voiced by Tokuyoshi Kawashima).
- Yoshiaki Ishida does not appear in the game, possibly due to the game lacking licensing for the Ferrari Testarossa.
- He does, however, appear as card in the game.
- Yuji Kishida and Shinji Ogishima are absent in this game due not yet introduced until release of Maximum Tune 3DX.
- Hayashi drives several traffic cars as Anonymous Driver.
- 10 Bonus Cars from Shutokou Battle X/Import Tuner Challenge are unlockable in this game.
- The game released 2 weeks before Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 3 and a month before Wangan Midnight Portable (for PlayStation Portable).
